Joraan Øverland

“Scandinavian Modernist Movement”

“My family lived in the remote mountains of Telemark, Norway for well over 1000 years, and I feel it’s this deep rooted ancestry that helped shape me as an artist”.

Drawing on the mid-century Scandinavian modernist movement, my work comprises of simple curves, circles, or squares. Nature also brings out a great deal of inspiration, like the tall fjords, waves in the sea, our Canadian landscapes and even the dazzling northern lights.

I work mostly in silver, but dabble in copper, brass and even gold. But it’s the lost wax method that channels my creativity the best. There is just something so satisfying about coming up with a design, sculpting it into wax, then having it cast into metal using the ancient methods. My goal is create coveted pieces that are not only revered and valued, but also looked upon as art by those who wear them.

I am dedicated to continue the important work of the early Scandinavian modernists.
